College Network Access

What is my network login ID and password?

  • Each student has an individual user name and password, which is:

User Name: The student's 6-digit student ID number (no dashes)

Password: The first 4 letters of his/her last name, all lower-case (or less if last name is shorter than 4 letters) followed by: 2-digit birth month and 2-digit birth day.

Example password for Fred Jones, born January 22, 1980: jone0122

Example password for Jane Yu, born December 2, 1979: yu1202

The first time a student logs in to the College network, he/she will be directed to change the default password. All passwords must conform to the following guidelines:

    • Letters, numerals, and special characters (i.e., - $ !) can be used
    • Each successive password must be different than the previous 5 passwords for that user.
    • Passwords must be 6 - 8 characters in length.
    • Any single character cannot be repeated more than 4 sequential times.
    • At least one character in the password must be numeric

Logging in to the network will give the students access to:

    • All programs installed on the computer (MS Office, Internet Explorer, etc.)
    • Server-based software for courses the student is enrolled in.
    • Shared folders which correspond to the course(s) the student is enrolled in.
    • Home folder on the server (25 MB of space, not backed up).
    • Students will see what shared folders they have access to, as well as their home directories, by opening Windows Explorer.

Can I change my username?

  • Your username is automatically generated and cannot be changed.

Can I change my password?

  • After you are successfully logged into the college network you can hit Ctrl/Alt/Del and then click the 'change password' button. Select MPTCTREE. Enter your old password, your new password, and re-enter your new password to confirm it is correct. Then click the 'OK' button.

How long is my account active?

    • All network accounts are provisioned based on a student's registration in courses for the current term.
    • If not enrolled in a course for the current term, no account will be provisioned (created).
    • In the case of an existing student who already has an account, who then has no courses in the next term, then:
      • Start Date of New Term (without enrollment) + 15 Days = Disable Account
      • Start Date of New Term (without enrollment) + 15 Days + 3 years = Delete Account
    • When the account is deleted, the student home directory files will be removed.
    • All "Course Data" (found in the \\student1\vol1\courses\ folder) is purged after 18 months from the end date of a course.

How do I log off the Network?

  • To prohibit other users from accessing student's private files and program-specific software, users must logout when they leave a computer in any of Moraine Park's labs, kiosks, or libraries. To logout, students should simply use the Windows logout feature: Click Start > Log off 123456 (user ID).

    start menu

Underlined in red are two mapped drives: I and O.

I: is the student's home directory. By default, each student has 25MB of space in his/her home directory.

Under the O: drive is a folder called "Courses," and under that are subfolders for each course the student is enrolled in. The course numbers are indicated by the blue squares. The numbers preceding the course number indicate the year and semester of the course.

Under each course the student will see 3 folders:

    • Instructor: Students have "read only" access to this folder. Instructors have full access.
    • Shared: All class members and the instructor have equal access to documents in this folder. They can all add/delete/change, etc.
    • Student ID (6-digit number): The student and instructor have full access to this folder; other students will not even see it.

Since home directories (I: drive) are only 25MB, students should use the course folders for their coursework. The space in the course folders is not limited.

What folders/files do I have access to on the network?

  • Below is a screen shot of what students will see (partially) from Windows Explorer after logging in to the network:

    menu Structure

If a student does not log out of the network, lab computers will automatically log out of the account after four hours of inactivity. Library and kiosk PCs will automatically log out after 15 minutes of inactivity.

How much network storage space do I have?

  • Each student has a 25MB home directory to be used for miscellaneous files.

Are my files backed up every night?

  • In the event of accidental file deletion there are no file recovery services available. It is the student's responsibility to safely back up important data to another storage medium, i.e., a jump drive or CD.

What files can I store in my network storage area?

  • Any files related to college course work may be stored in your network storage area. Directories will be monitored for any illegal, improper, or damaging material. Any violations found will be deleted and action will be taken. For information about acceptable use of college network resources please refer to the Student Information Handbook.

Can I access my network storage area from home?

  • Yes. You can access your files from any Internet browser capable computer. Students can store (upload) and retrieve (download) class project files. This feature is not designed to operate as a network attached drive. Therefore, direct access to files via a browser is not possible.

Go to the following website and then login by using your college network user name and password. http://myfiles.morainepark.edu

In order to work on a file, you need to download it to the local machine. To do this, highlight the file you want to work on. Click File- Download. Click on Save, and browse to where you want to save the file on the local machine. Please remember: When you are done working on a file, be sure to upload the file back to your network storage area. Use the "help" option for additional assistance.
